GeneSeek Has a New Address

ASA’s licensed lab, GeneSeek, Inc. has been busy moving to their new, larger location over the course of past few weeks.  It’s only a few miles down the road from their old facility but will give them plenty of space to grow. If you have a DNA kit to mail to the lab and it will arrive on/after Monday, April 28, 2014, please use the new lab address to avoid any delays in processing.

4131 N. 48th ST.

The US Postal Service will forward mail for up a year from the old to new address, however, Fed Ex and UPS will only forward packages for a period of two weeks(up until Friday, May 9).  It is very important if you are shipping via Fed Ex or UPS to use the new address provided above. Starting today all DNA kits mailed out of the office will have the new address listed on the self-addressed envelopes.

If you have any questions or concerns please email or call our office at 406.587.4531.

Embryo Calves – When is Parent Verification Required?

In the ASA rules and bylaws on page 11, Rule II, section D, it states the following:
All embryo transfer calves produced from a flush collected after December 31, 1999, and being registered by
someone other than the breeder (owner or lessee of the donor at the time of the flush) must be parentage verified
through an ASA-approved laboratory at owner’s expense.

What exactly does this mean?

  • If you do not own the donor dam and are not an authorized representative on the account that owns the donor dam, you are required to parent verify any embryo calves prior to being able to register them in the ASA database. See post on Ordering a DNA Kit for more information on how to initiate the DNA testing process.  If you absolutely need an issue date for a show or entry deadline, you can place the embryo calf on file(non-registered) prior to the issue date/entry deadline and receive an on file number in ( ) that will become the registration number on the animal once DNA testing has completed and registration submitted.
  • If you own the donor dam or are associated with the owner of the donor dam, you are not required to parent verify embryos produced during time of ownership.
*Note – All donor dams must have DNA on file to qualify as a donor dam in the ASA database, regardless of ownership or breed.
  • If you purchase a flush on a donor dam and a lease is filed with ASA indicating this, you do not have to parent verify the resulting embryo calves from that particular flush.

Remember, it takes anywhere from 14-21 days for parent verification testing to be completed at the lab so please plan accordingly.

If you have any questions on the above information please contact or call our office at 406.587.4531.

DNA Results 4-18-14

DNA parentage results were uploaded this morning on animals that went in to test the week of 3/26/14 and 4/10/2014.  We also uploaded a set of GGP-HD results.  If you had an animal in test from one of these weeks that is registered or on file, you can access the information by visiting Herdbook Services, log-in, go to Data Search, Animal Search. Type in your animal’s registration number and hit search.  If you look to the left of the TraitTrac light there will be a three letter designation for parent verification if it has been completed(see graphic below). Here’s what the three letters stand for:
PCB – Parent Confirmed to Both means the animal has qualified through DNA parentage to the sire and dam
PCS – Parent Confirmed to Sire means the animal has qualified through DNA parentage to the sire(no DNA on file with ASA to compare to dam)
PCD – Parent Confirmed to Dam means the animal has qualified through DNA parentage to the dam(no DNA on file with ASA to compare to sire)
BTF – Animal DNA on File means the animal’s DNA was placed on file and neither parent had DNA on file for comparison
*An animal’s parent(s) are not required to have DNA on file for the animal to qualify as an AI sire/Donor Dam, however, if the parent(s) have DNA on file the lab will run a comparison against the parent(s) to ensure the animal qualifies to the parent(s).
Example of online parentage designationIf the animal had a genomic panel run(either GGP-HD or 50K) it is designated by a ‘GE’ on the online pedigree display.  GE stands for Genomic Enhanced EPDs. A genomic panel is required on all AI sires and Donor Dams DNA typed after May 1, 2012.  GE designation example on animal pedigreeIf you have any questions about the above information please email or call our office at 406.587.4531.

DNA Invoicing for GGP-HD – How it works

If you have requested a DNA kit on an animal to have the GGP-HD ran, sent the sample in to the lab along with the ASA paperwork, your ASA account will be invoiced for the DNA testing once we have posted the results in the database.  Here’s what you can expect to see once ASA has posted the GGP-HD results.

If the animal  is having a *GGP-HD(formerly 50K) panel run
*This panel is required of all AI sires/Donor Dams and includes parent verification if parent(s) have DNA on file with ASA.
The parentage will be uploaded first.  Once it has been uploaded to Herdbook Services, you will receive an invoice. If you have an email address linked to your account you will have access to the invoice copy immediately. If you do not have an email address linked to the account, the invoice is mailed to you.  The invoice amount will be $30.00. After you have received this invoice, you will then receive a copy of the animal’s parentage results letter.
The GGP-HD panel results are uploaded second. The invoicing for the second half of the fee is currently done manually and may take a bit to be invoiced to the account. Once the billing is complete, a second invoice of $60.00, will be sent out.  The total cost of the GGP-HD is $90.00.  The GGP-HD testing fee is currently split in to two portions and as you can see in the graphic below, has two separate billing descriptions.  The first one is for DNA parentage and the second for GGP-HD testing. If you have any questions on DNA billing please email or call our office at 406.587.4531.
