How to Order a DNA Kit

If you’re getting ready to do some DNA testing on animals, here are the instructions on how to request a DNA kit from ASA.

#1 – Gather information on animal. If animal is registered, provide ASA with registration number. If animal is unregistered the following information is needed to generate a DNA kit/paperwork: animal tattoo, sex, sire and dam’s registration numbers. NOTE: If you wish to run a GGP-HD/GGP-LD panel on the animal it MUST be registered/on file with ASA prior to requesting a DNA kit.

#2 – Call/email/fax ASA to request a DNA kit. Indicate whether you wish to have a blood blotter card(lab prefers) or hair collector card(additional $3.00/animal fee) mailed out. You may use the DNA kit request form located on www.simmental.org, fill out and send to ASA. ASA will then generate/mail out your DNA kit.
Office – 406.587.4531      Email – dna@simmgene.com    Fax – 406.587.9301

Mailed kit will include a blood blotter/hair collector card*, instructions and self-addressed envelope with the lab’s address.
*NOTE: If you already have a hair/blood collector card on hand, contact ASA and provide the barcode on the card, along with information from #1. Paperwork will be generated and either emailed/faxed, with a standard 24-hour turnaround.

#3 – Indicate testing to be completed on sample:

  • GGP-HD*(includes parent verification(PV) and diluter) $90.00
*required on all AI sires and Donor Dams
  • GGP-LD(includes parent verification(PV) and diluter) $50.00
-recommended for herd sires and replacement heifers
  • Parent Verification(PV) $30.00
-required on purchased embryos or when the applicant on the registration is not associated with the owner of the donor dam
  • Genetic Defects $25.00/each
    -AM,NH,CA,DD,TH,PHA,OS
  • Horned/Polled $50.00
  • Coat Color(homozygous black) $20.00
  • Red Charlie(RC) – $7.00
  • Diluter(silver diluter) $20.00
  • Oculocutaneous Hypopigmentation(OH) – $25.00
  • BVD-PI $5.00

Bundling discounts apply if you request the following testing at the same time:

  1. GGP-HD, Horned/Polled, Coat Color – $135.00 ($25.00 discount applied to account once all results completed).
  2. GGP-LD, Horned/Polled, Coat Color – $100.00 ($20.00 discount applied to account once all results completed).
  3. Parent Verification, Horned/Polled, Coat Color – $90.00 ($10.00 discount applied to account once all results completed).

#4 – Once you receive your DNA Kit, collect the sample and mail it, along with the ASA paperwork, to GeneSeek, Inc., 4131 N. 48th St., Lincoln, NE 68504.

Breeding Season – What You Need to Know

Are you getting ready to send a sire off for collection or flush a donor dam?  Here’s a reminder on what testing needs to be on file with ASA for an animal to qualify as an AI sire/Donor Dam.

DNA-HD logo*Any AI Sire/Donor Dam (including other breed animals and commercial dams)

  • Any animal DNA tested after May 1, 2012, will need to provide proof that the GGP-HD/50K/genomic testing has been completed. If the animal is registered with ASA as a Foundation animal, proof of a genomic panel can be obtained from the primary breed Association if the animal is Angus, Red Angus, Maine-Anjou, Limousin, Gelbvieh or Hereford. If the primary breed Association does not offer a genomic panel, member’s can submit a sample through ASA for GGP-HD analysis.
  • If animal is a Foundation, SNPs/STRs will need to be forwarded from the other breed Association along with the date animal was DNA typed.

*Any AI Sire/Donor Dam (including other breed animals and commercial dams)

  • If the animal was DNA tested prior to May 1, 2012, member’s do not need to provide proof of GGP-HD/genomic testing. Animal will be be approved as AI/Donor Dam based off the date DNA was completed provided by the primary breed Association.

*Any Sire Used to Service a Donor Dam

  • Even if the sire live covers the donor dam, sire is required to meet AI sire requirements in order for ET progeny to be registered.

*TraitTrac Status – Genetic Defect Testing

If a sire or donor dam contains an 1/8 of a suspect breed population and carries a designation of population risk or carrier in lineage for genetic defects, they will need to be tested for each of the defects displaying PR/CL under TraitTrac to prevent progeny holds.  Regardless of the results of the testing, i.e. the animal tests as a carrier, the record will be updated and progeny able to be registered and certificates issued.

How to Look Up Frame Scores and Adjusted Scrotals

After you have entered in a hip height and scrotal measurement under the *Year(yearling) tab of your online data entry spreadsheet and submitted the job through completion, you may wonder where you can go on the website to look up the frame scores and adjusted scrotal measurements. Follow the steps outlined below in order to retrieve that information from the database.
*Note: If your yearling weight date is different than the date you took hip height and scrotal measurements, please contact ASA prior to submitting the data and Steve McGuire will assist you with submission.

Log-in to Herdbook Services
Go to Data Search
Select Special Reports
Special Reports

From the left, select Animals* by clicking on the blue +
Click on + for Optional Data

You will now need to choose one of the following two ways to obtain the information.
1. Select Frame Scores and Adj Scrotal from List, enter in the ASA registration/on file numbers of the animals you wish to see.
2. Select Frame Score and Scrotal by Job, enter in the job number(invoice number) where you updated the information.
Select Get Results and it should display the requested information on your screen for you to either print or download in to an excel file.
